.125 Elloise Bennett

When I first met Elloise, I didn’t call her that. Instead, I used “Ms.” because she was the Assistant Principal of my high school and I was just an eager ASB student likely looking for assistance with some Spirit Week concept or event. During the couple of years that she worked at the high school, Elloise was consistently kind to me, and all students for that matter, and she always treated me as an adult with sincerity, clarity and compassion. This sense of trust and responsibility that she instilled in me was something I truly appreciated. Never once did she make me feel patronized; in fact, it was always the opposite: encouraged, motivated, and inspired.

On top of this was my awe of her ability to juggle and manage the opinions, ideas, and likely unwarranted complaints, that came from students, teachers and parents alike. She would do this with such an intent listening ear that was always genuine, and her patience was unrivaled. Years later and with both of us living in NY, I was able to see her at The Met recently for an event and was quickly reminded of her contagious positive energy and infectious laugh. She’s so sweet, caring and incredibly intelligent, and I’m immensely grateful to still be in contact with her and experience her wonderful presence.

Elloise, thank you so much for our conversation and for telling me about your lovely dogs and the exciting journey of your work and career. Thank you for believing in me as a high school student then and as an adult today. I will always appreciate your strength and kindness. Thank you for so clearly being dedicated to your friends and family and for inspiring me to be better just by seeing that care that you give. I’m so grateful to know you and have had you as an impactful role model during such a formative part of my life. Thank you, Elloise, for being you.
